ABOUT ABOUT

WandaVision - the opening series for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) phase 4 - will answer the question "Where have mutants been all these years?". This cinematic universe has been building for 12 years, but the X-Men and Marvel's mutants have not been mentioned and have never appeared in any movies.

WandaVision's Release Date Confirmed For December 2020
*Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are mutant superheroes, but when appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron, this pair of brothers is introduced as a product of a laboratory.

Why hasn't the X-Men appeared in the MCU yet?

The reason the X-Men never appeared in the MCU is due to the long-standing strained relationship between Marvel and 20th Century Fox. For decades ago, Fox owned the rights to make movies about popular mutant superheroes such as X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc. Therefore, Marvel, although the official owner, could not mention it. any X-Men, or even mention the word "mutants" in his movies. In 2001, Fox sued Marvel for its plans to develop the Mutant X television project, even though the series was based on entirely new characters with different origins from the X-Men and other mutants.

When Can Fans Expect to See Fox Marvel Characters in the MCU?
*Marvel had to sell the rights to many titles when the studio struggled in the 1990s.

Currently, Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox. With the rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four automatically "in hand", Marvel is actively developing new projects for these superheroes. Director Jon Watts will direct the Fantastic Four reboot, making it the first mutant movie to appear in the MCU.

But bringing mutants into a fully built world is not easy, especially when the X-Men universe is bigger than we imagined. This is when WandaVision "shines" as its "pave the way".

The House of M plot and its influence on WandaVision
Marvel has repeatedly announced that WandaVision will be inspired by the House of M comic. Scarlet Witch goes through a severe psychological crisis after Tommy and Billy - her two children and Vision - are absorbed by Mephisto. In her grief, she begins to mess with reality with her powers, and although her father (Magneto) and Professor X have tried their best to help her through the pain, it has not helped her situation improve. .

Superhero Romance of the Week: Vision and the Scarlet...
Wanda and her uncontrollable powers become increasingly dangerous. After learning that other superheroes intend to destroy Wanda, Quicksilver advises his sister to create an alternate reality of her own. In this "new" reality, Marvel's heroes get what they crave. However, it is clear that something is still wrong…

Scarlet Witch wipes out mutants… in just three words!
In the reality of House of M, mutants make up the majority of the population and Magneto is the ruler of the world. Realizing this was not "reality" but just Quicksilver's idea, Magneto killed him in a fit of rage. Grief over his brother's death and realizing that Magneto will always choose mutants over family, Wanda revives Quicksilver, uttering three words that changed the entire Marvel comics: "No more mutants." (Translation: No more mutants).

The Biblical Context behind Marvel's Stories - Hope...
In an instant, Wanda brought the reality he created back to the normal world, turning 98% of the mutant population at that time to a state of no power. Only nearly 200 mutants on Earth still retain their powers. Even 15 years later, mutants who still have the ability are still struggling to rebuild what has been lost.

WandaVision Explains X-Men's "disappearance"
WandaVision can offer two explanations for mutants not appearing in the MCU. One, if you go with the plot of House of M and tweak it a bit, then Wanda accidentally wiped out the mutants in the MCU, but none of the MCU characters and the X-Men group of mutants have any memory of that. mutants used to exist in this universe. After the events of WandaVision, everyone's memories as well as the mutant's lost abilities will be restored.

Or, WandaVision could be going in the direction of the multiverse and different time dimension that Marvel is building for Phase 4. Scarlet Witch could have lumped all of the mutants of the Marvel Cinematic Universe into one alternate universe. So, and again, no one remembers the existence of mutants in this universe.

Either option offers a solid explanation for why mutants never appeared in the MCU, as well as why the audience did not see the X-Men mutant team present to support in the battles.

Another point worth noting is that WandaVision will directly lead to the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Scarlet Witch will also appear in this movie. Remember that Doctor Strange had to look through 14,000,605 alternate futures in Infinity War just to find the future in which Thanos was defeated. With his powers, Doctor Strange can travel across multiple universes and multiple space-time lines where mutants still exist alongside characters from the MCU. It is predicted that the events of WandaVision will complement what Doctor Strange saw in Infinity War, and begin to open up the multiverse in the Doctor Strange sequel.
